ProNovi

The project ProNoVi (Analysis Methods and Design Measures for the Reduction of Noise and Vibration Induced by Marine Propellers) tackles the issue of anthropogenic underwater radiated noise (URN) pollution caused by marine traffic. Turbulence and cavitation are considered to be the primary broadband acoustic sources of noise from a propeller. Therefore, from 2019 to 2021, computational fluid dynamics simulation tools were expanded to accurately predict the turbulent flow around a vessel and the propeller and its induced cavitation, with a focus on trailing vortex cavitation. Additional acoustic methods were implemented in order to find a solution to near- and far-field noise that considered the vessel and the propeller slipstream, leading to novel approaches regarding the prediction of hull pressure pulses and URN signatures of hull-propeller configurations.

The highly automated and autonomous operation of vehicles is an upcoming disruptive technology in all sectors of transportation, including marine traffic, where it offers excellent compatibility with our highly maneuverable and responsive azimuthing propulsion products. As a first step, the project StruMan (Maneuvering & controlling ships near Structures) combines research on shallow and spatially restricted bodies of water with research on the capacity of an autonomous system. The aim here is to allow multiple azimuthing propulsion units installed in typical inland vessels to be utilized for maneuvers in the vicinity of fixed structures, such as docks and bridges. A fundamental basis for the design, simulation, and prototype testing of a demonstration system has been created using AMP (Advanced Maneuvering Pilot) and tested in field. This is a major step on the way to future automation so that operator comfort, operation efficiency, and vessel safety can be increased for our customers.

The project HyPNoS (Hydrodynamic Propeller Noise Monitoring System) investigates the noise reduction caused by modifying the propeller design in a series of double-ended ferries. The motivation behind this is the protection of cetacean species in the Strait of Georgia near Vancouver, Canada. The reduction in noise and the correlation between underwater noise and shipborne vibrations can be quantified using structure-borne and underwater noise measurements. The acquired set of measurement data is then utilized to develop a revolutionary underwater radiated noise-monitoring system based on state-of-the-art machine-learning technology. The prototype system is located on board and creates a live prediction of the vessel’s emitted noise levels, so operators and owners can act dynamically according to the requirements of their environment.

Turbulent cavitating flows impact the operation of military ships in several significant ways. Physics-based, high-fidelity simulation of these flows faces several challenges. The main challenge faced in tackling turbulent multiphase flows of naval interest stems from the inherently complex physics of the flows occurring at high Reynolds numbers. Turbulence greatly affects the interfacial dynamics of multiphase flows and the dynamics of cavitating bubbles throughout their lifetime across a wide range of length- and time-scales. Recent developments in the measurement techniques for turbulent multiphase flows using state-of-the-art optical techniques, high-speed video and X-rays have enabled us to look into the flow-fields and phase distributions of multiphase flows with unprecedented precision. The experimental data with such details not only give a new insight into the fundamental physics of the flows but also offer great opportunities to validate numerical simulations in a systematic and comprehensive manner. Although challenges still remain for high-fidelity numerical simulations, today’s high-performance computing allows us to pursue a paradigm where the salient physics of turbulent multiphase flows can be predicted using advanced computational algorithms and physical models.

FlettnerFLEET

The project "FlettnerFLEET – Development of a comprehensive methodology for the integration of Flettner rotors on different ship types" is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action as part of the "Maritime Research Program". Reducing emissions in shipping is the order of the day. Additional wind drives can make an important contribution. The FlettnerFLEET project creates the necessary prerequisites and foundations for the further development of Flettnerrotor technology and for the development of ships with this innovative propulsion system. The project consortium, consisting of partners from science and industry. The project aims to develop a comprehensive methodology for the design of vessels with flettner rotors to enable wide application of the technology in shipping. For this purpose, various ship types are examined in the project together with the participating shipping companies and optimized according to their properties for operation with Flettner rotors. The aim of SCHOTTEL GmbH is the development of economical design and manufacturing processes for FLETTNER-rotors, as well as the development of a concept for a main propulsion control system.
