“Partner of choice”: New Silverback truckable tug with SCHOTTEL RudderPropellers

The compact OX series tractor tug will have a bollard pull of almost seven tons.

SCHOTTEL is to equip a new OX series tractor tug from U.S.-based aluminum workboat builder Silverback Marine with two SCHOTTEL RudderPropellers type SRP 100. Designed in collaboration with Seattle headquartered Elliott Bay Design Group, the truckable tug will have a bollard pull of almost seven tons and ensure excellent manoeuvrability with an extremely compact size of just 7.9 metres (26’-0”) in length and 4.4 metres (14’- 6”) in width. The vessel, being built for the U.S. Department of Defense, is expected to be delivered in late 2025.

SCHOTTEL full propulsion package for ULA’s SpaceShip

SCHOTTEL is to equip a new RoRo cargo vessel for U.S.-based United Launch Alliance (ULA) being built by Bollinger Shipyards in Amelia, Louisiana. The vessel, to be named SpaceShip, will transport Vulcan rockets from the factory in Decatur, Alabama, to the launch sites at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida and Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. It will be equipped with three SCHOTTEL RudderPropellers SRP 460 LE and two SCHOTTEL TransverseThrusters STT 1. SpaceShip’s tailored electric system will be designed and supplied by elkon, a member of the SCHOTTEL Group. The vessel is scheduled for completion in 2026.

SpaceShip will transport Vulcan rockets from the factory in Decatur, Alabama, to the launch sites at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida and Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

Robert Allan and SCHOTTEL celebrate milestone of 500 tugs

Canadian naval architect Robert Allan Ltd. and German propulsion specialist SCHOTTEL are celebrating a significant milestone in their long-standing partnership: the construction of the 500th tug designed by Robert Allan and equipped with SCHOTTEL propulsion systems. Tug number 500 is one of a pair for KOTUG Canada, built to Robert Allan’s RAsalvor 4400-DFM design and equipped with SCHOTTEL RudderPropellers (SRP) and SYDRIVE-M.

Significant milestone: 500 tugs designed by Robert Allan and equipped with SCHOTTEL propulsion systems have been built.

Powerful and environmentally friendly: SCHOTTEL hybrid drive solution for KOTUG’s methanol-fuelled tugs

SCHOTTEL is equipping the world's first large purpose-built dual-fuel methanol escort tugs based on the Robert Allan Ltd. RASalvor 4400-DFM design for towage company KOTUG Canada with rudderpropellers featuring the mechanical hybrid solution SYDRIVE-M. The tugs – to be named SD Aisemaht and SD Qwiy Aanitsa Sarah – are currently in the final stages of construction at Turkish Sanmar Shipyards. After their completion in Q3 2025, they will service Canada’s Trans Mountain Expansion Project, escorting laden crude oil tankers from the outer harbour limits of the Port of Vancouver to the open Pacific Ocean through the commercial shipping lanes of the Salish Sea.

The tugs will service Canada’s Trans Mountain Expansion Project.

SCHOTTEL ControllablePropeller: Retrofit blades for EEXI compliance

Efficiency upgrade with SCHOTTEL retrofit propeller blades: With the EEXI (Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index), new benchmarks for the energy efficiency of ships came into force in January 2023 as an integral part of the IMO’s (International Maritime Organization) long-term climate objectives. In order to comply with the EEXI regulations, an increasing number of vessels are operating at lower speeds (slow steaming) to reduce fuel consumption. SCHOTTEL offers its customers the option of adapting the propulsion system to the vessels' changed operating profiles, thus achieving maximum efficiency.

The new, design-enhanced propeller blades will increase the efficiency of the propulsion system.

SCHOTTEL full propulsion packages for three LNG bunkering vessels

SCHOTTEL has been selected to supply full propulsion packages for three new LNG bunkering vessels (LNGBV), each consisting of a controllable pitch propeller, a retractable rudder propeller and a transverse thruster. The ships, with a loading capacity of 20,000 cbm, are currently under construction at the Chinese shipyard Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering Co. Ltd and are scheduled for delivery in 2026 and 2027.

SCHOTTEL to propel Portuguese Navy’s Multi-Purpose Support Ship

SCHOTTEL has been awarded a significant contract to supply two EcoPeller SRE 560 and one TransverseThruster STT 3 FP for a Multi-Purpose Support Ship (MPSS) for the Portuguese Navy. The innovative new ship design for modern defense and security purposes has been developed by Dutch Damen Shipyards Group based on a new concept and specific requirements of the Portuguese Navy.

SCHOTTEL is to equip a Multi-Purpose Support Ship (MPSS) for the Portuguese Navy with two EcoPeller SRE 560 and one TransverseThruster STT 3 FP.
