Semi-submerged TRITON platform
SCHOTTEL HYDRO subsidiary Black Rock Tidal Power (BRTP) was awarded a berth at the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE) and is currently building a TRITON platform for the Bay of Fundy, Canada. The device will carry 40 SIT with a total capacity of 2.5 MW. The consent for a second 2.5 MW platform is already in place.
TRITON is a floating platform carrying a number of instream turbines. The platform is connected to a single mooring point in the seabed by means of a universal joint. It therefore is self-aligning to the flow to follow incoming and outgoing tides. As the vertical hulls, called ‘spar buoys’, are surface piercing they can be accessed at any time to have maintenance of the electric systems located in the spar buoys.
Together with the berth BRTP was also awarded the developmental tidal feed-in tariff (FIT) and the respective power purchase agreement (PPA). The electricity supply generated will be fed into the North American power supply System.
